For one of our summer team-building and bonding events, BrownFlynn took Lake Erie by storm. Last Friday, our team took the ClevelandRocks! Downtown kayaking tour with 41 Degrees North, Ohio’s most comprehensive sea kayaking program. Departing from Whiskey Island, we kayaked 5 nautical miles through Lake Erie. We paddled by the historic U.S. Coast Guard station (which is for sale now!), across the Cuyahoga River, near the Cliff’s SS Mather (a retired ore freighter turned ship museum), and under the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. We enjoyed panoramic views of the Cleveland skyline and the nautical life of Lake Erie. With a team that ranged from avid kayakers to amateurs who had never stepped foot in a kayak, we managed to complete the trip with no catastrophes (although there were a couple close calls on my part)! To celebrate “staying afloat,” we went to the Sunset Grille happy hour at the Wendy Park marina afterwards. Kayaking was a great way for us to bond outside of the office while enjoying our city and the opportunities it offers.

As involved citizens in our communities, we appreciate 41 Degrees North’s mission to “offer the highest quality sea kayak instruction for all levels, help people discover the opportunities for sea kayaking in the Great Lakes, and protect and preserve the environments we paddle in.” Established in 2003, the company has grown from having a fleet of only 10 kayaks and 2 founders to over 50 kayaks and 8 employees. 41 Degrees North actively follows its sustainable mission by practicing the “Leave No Traces” principles in all of its programs and trips, and purchasing carbon offsets to reduce its business emissions footprint to zero. It is a pioneer in Cleveland’s lakefront redevelopment by providing a sustainable form of entertainment. Because of its success in promoting community pride and sustainable development, 41 Degrees North should serve as an inspiration for other local businesses, both in Ohio and nationwide.
